Manipulating Units of Length

There are only a few problems here. The idea is that they have learned the concept from the other problems, and now are extending it to "mixed-bases", such as are found in the English units of length (yards, feet, inches).

First, a problem is given in kumquats, then the same problem is given in length. You should not put the two problems together on the same page, so that students cannot just copy their first answer.

Addition

Kumquats are delivered to your warehouse in crates. Each crate of kumquats contains 3 boxes. Each box of kumquats contains 12 kumquats.

Ja-shua has to make two deliveries on Monday. One family is to receive 2 boxes and 10 loose kumquats. A second family is to receive 2 boxes and and 4 loose kumquats. You have a warehouse full of crates. Do not open more crates or boxes than you need to, but give Ja-shua exactly what he needs.

Ja-shua has to make three deliveries on Tuesday. One family is to receive 1 crate and 6 loose kumquats. The second family is to receive 2 boxes and and 8 loose kumquats. The third family receives 1 box and 3 loose kumquats.

One giant tootsie roll is 1 yard, 2 feet, 10 inches long. A second giant tootsie roll is 2 feet 4 inches long. If we put these two tootsie rolls together, how long are they?

One giant tootsie roll is 1 yard 6 inches long. A second giant tootsie roll is 2 feet 8 inches long. The third giant tootsie roll is 1 foot 3 inches. If we put these three tootsie rolls together, how long are they?

Subtraction

Ja-shua starts Wednesday with 2 crates, 2 boxes, and 7 loose kumquats. His first delivery is 1 crate and 1 box. After this delivery, what does he have left?

His second delivery is 8 loose kumquats. Now what does he have left?

His third delivery is 1 box and 5 loose kumquats. Now what does he have left?

A giant tootsie roll is 2 yards, 2 feet, and 7 inches long. Ja-nthan cuts off a piece that is 1 yard, 1 foot long. How long is the remaining hot dog?

Now he cuts off a piece that is 8 inches long. How long is the remaining tootsie roll?

Finally, he cuts off a piece that is 1 foot, 5 inches long. How long is the remaining tootsie roll?

Multiplication

On Thursday, Ja-shua has to deliver 1 crate, 1 box, and 3 kumquats to 7 families. Make up his delivery.

Ja-nthan puts 7 giant tootsie rolls end to end. Each tootie roll is 1 yard, 1 foot, 3 inches long. What is the total length of his tootie rolls?

Division

My-Kell is new to his job. He brings kumquats to a village, and splits them evenly among the families that come to get kumquats. He brings a crate to the first village. Three families show up. His supervisor explains: Open the crate. Give a box to each family.

He brings 5 crates, 1 box, and 3 loose kumquats to the next village. Again, 3 families show up. His supervisor explains, first pass out crates to each family. Each family gets 1 crate, with two leftover. Open these remaining crates. That gives us 7 boxes. Pass these out evenly to each family. So each family gets 2 boxes, with one left over. Open the remaining box. Now there are 15 loose kumquats. Give 5 to each family.

Got it? Ask your supervisor if you do not understand.

Now My-Kell is on his own. He has 7 crates, 1 box, and 4 loose kumquats. Again three families show up. What should he do?
